Dengue is one of the most common cause of hospitalization among children in the Philippines. It is caused by aedes aegypti or aedes albopictus mosquitoes that usually bites during daytime. Aside from dengue, there is also the chikungunya that shares some clinical signs with dengue and can be misdiagnosed in areas where dengue is common. It is said that one can be infected by both diseases at the same time. Chikungunya is rarely fatal while dengue can be.
Various preventive measures have been and are currently being implemented to stop if not minimize the reproduction of the aedis mosquitoes. Department of Science and Technology (DOST) came up with the DOST Ovicidal/Larvicidal (OL) Trap System that attracts the female mosquitoes to lay their eggs on the solution.
In an effort to help the government in its drive against killer dengue, jd pamana foundation launched a community project to minimize the growth of dengue causing mosquitoes by providing them with OL Trap Kit System.
Last October 2- 5, 2013, jd pamana distributed mosquito ol trap kits to the residents of brgy. Tapuyan, gasan, Marinduque. Marinduque is also a hotspot area for dengue and chikungunya cases. JD Pamana Team lead by Jerwin Pangilinan, assisted by barangay health workers led by Ms. Cristy Alag distributed the kits to the each household of the barangay.
According to Ms. Marisol Montaron, Provincial Health Officer they are on their second year of implementing the OL Trap System but the recipients are the schools in the province.
After distributing to the households, the remaining kits were also distributed to Tapuyan Elementary School and Tapuyan National High School.
